ISSUES

"I come from a blue-collar working-class family, I know what it's like to work for a living and have to provide for a family. I want Wake County to continue to prosper so that we all can have a great place to live, work and play. I will work to create good-paying jobs that provide benefits that families need, I will work to improve our local per pupil funding and increase teacher pay, and I will always make public safety a top priority. I have lived in Wake County my entire life and I pledge to you that I will work as hard for all the people as I do for my family."
MY PRIORITIES
Protecting The Environment

One of my top priorities is to ensure the safety of our natural resources:

  • Protecting RDU Forest

  • Renewable energy: Solar and wind

  • Water quality

  • Air quality

  • Falls Lake drinking water protection

I believe the RDU Airport Authority exceeded its authority by not first obtaining the approval of the four local government deeded owners.

The proposed quarry represents a real threat to the priceless asset we have in Umstead State Park.

The incumbent has been pro-quarry in the mid-1990s, and again in 2011 when he was erroneously promoting digging a quarry and rezoning low-density residential to industrial/quarry on the east side of Umstead State Park, an action that delayed the Crabtree Creek greenway from connecting to Umstead State Park.

Education

It is time to make sure Wake County Public Schools are top priority in our county budget. First and foremost, I am committed to making sure the Wake Commission does everything they can to raise teacher pay to the national average and to lead the state in per-pupil spending. I want to provide our public schools with the money and resources they need to keep the state's largest school system the best for our children and a strong economic driver for our economy.

Housing

Wake County has been my home for my entire life, and it has a lot to offer our citizens. We are one of the fastest-growing counties in the country and this growth has brought new challenges. We must take a thoughtful and purposeful approach to manage this historic growth to ensure that we have the housing and infrastructure we need, including affordable and workforce housing. Citizens from all walks of life deserve a safe and affordable place to live. I am also concerned that as we grow, we work to protect our historic homes and communities.

An Inclusive Community

I was raised in a low income, working middle-class family. I am the oldest of five boys. we did not have a lot of money in our home but it was full of love and laughter. We had 7 people sharing a Three bedroom, one bathhouse. Pursuing a brighter future came with many obstacles in my family and in my neighborhood. My parents always supported my goals and even encouraged me even when it seemed impossible to find the money. I have seen first hand the discrimination certain people in this country use against others based on their income and race. I want my kids to see that this is wrong and I will work hard to eliminate the barriers that many poor children and children of color face in our schools, our jailhouses, our courts, and our streets. I will use the office of county commissioner in every way possible to improve the lives of every citizen in Wake County. I pledge to you that I will fight for all those who can't fight for themselves. I will be their voice. It's time we make a change.
